Just idle curiosity, and forgive me if this has been asked before, but, roughly speaking, what proportion of your average daily music listening time would you say is given over to the Grateful Dead?

Though it's been said many times, many ways: not enough.

Or maybe it'd be better to say almost never too much?

I'll go for weeks without listening to the Dead. Usually, I've got some sounds going on. Sometimes it'll be NPR for a while, other times I'm running iTunes or the iPod with it just set to random. I've got lots of music, much of it is pretty good and I like most of it too, so it's like having my own private radio station.

Usually something in a recording will make me go, "Hey!" and then I'll listen to that artist / show / record for a few hours. With live Dead I usually have about a two show limit and I'll change it or get some quiet when I realise I'm no longer listening and / or hearing it.

I too, sometimes go for weeks without listening to the Dead. I find I just get too sad and sort of depressed at times.

The music brings back so many wonderful memories and certain songs just get me all emotional and bring tears to my eyes. I now live in Europe and miss everything about the music and the scene I was long part of. After listening to some great shows (and especially ones I attended) I get the blues and sometimes just want to pack my bags and go back to the Bay Area. I then listen to other music for a while until I get cheered up again.

Currently I am listening almost daily again as my 7 year old twins are huge Jerry fans and always requesting to hear certain songs. Their top 3 favorite songs are presently Fire on the Mountain, Cold Rain & Snow and Mountains of the Moon and they are 'trying' to learn them on guitar.

Sigh ...

According to the wife . . . too much

Probably 97% as I pretty much listen to GD all day long while working - occasionally JGB and then random bluegrass sometimes.

Depends on the day. I probably listen everyday at work although some days it might be an hour or so while others like today it could be all day. Some days/weeks I take a Dead vacation and don't listen at all. For the sake of this exercise i am considering all Jerry stuff to be Dead.

Curious to know what other bands folks grab on a continual basis as with the GD/JGB.

For me:
Neil
Bobby D/The Band - love those collaborations/era
Richard Thompson
Wilco
drvin n cryin/kevn kinney [playing the umpteenth straight year with warren at the x-mas jam]
Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams
... americana seems to be a bit of problem (and via the british isles from which it partially stems)

Have been contemplating the same thing after reading Rob’s post and trying to come up with a “proportion of my average daily music listening time is given over to the GD.”
At work the radio usually rules, but a couple of us slip in a cd here and there. I usually act as dj only on the weekends with a smaller crew – then we listen to the dead, or others from my list below. If I was to make a stab at a proportion, I’d guess around 50% GD at home and in the car. Some nights (and days off) you guys here steer me into more concentrated GD listening – and thanks for that!

A few other bands that grab me these days and the Archive has helped me explore, in no particular order and with lots of old classic favorites left out: Assembly of Dust, Steve Kimock, Umphrey’s McGee, Jim Weider, and I’d be amiss not to mention my friends - a local “groove-grass” trio called Jatoba. So many more…van, the band, the radiators, bob marley, dylan, dawg, coltrane, miles, satchmo….where does it end?

Courtesy of iTunes handy little 'last played' feature I can see exactly what the 9 hours of music I listened to today consisted of. It included:

Amon Duul II
Bob Dylan
Bruce Cockburn
Can
Daniel Lanois
Faust
Florence and the Machine
The Good, The Bad and the Queen
Lucy Kaplanski
Neil Young
R.E.M.
Robert Johnson
Steve Hunter
Three Beers 'til Dubuque
Van Morrison
Warren Zevon

sundry others and about half an hour of some band called the Grateful something or other. A pretty typical day's listening really.

I guess there's just too much to listen to to grab hold of anything much on a regular basis. Whether or not this is a good thing is something I have yet to decide.

I grabbed 02/24/2005 DC and 08/28 Dublin from Wilco's site
http://www.owlandbear.com/wilco-archive/

Any other recommendations from that list. Thanks.

Lots of Bobby D lately, even more since his Kitchener show a couple of Saturdays ago. With Sexton back in the band, I can't wait for the boots from this tour.

Otherwise Mayall, Marley, Knopfler and Young plus a great French-Canadian band called Harmonium mixed in 50-50 with GD and related material. This goes on all day rudely interrupted by phone calls and client-meetings.

yeah, I know, from my postings you'd think that all I do is cut and paste artwork with not a thing to say about the music
well - half of that is true - I find myself with not much (that hasn't already been said) about the music. My favorite show is either the one I'm playin or the next one. I do have a penchant for eras - 73 is always a good bet. Currently on a '79 kick. Yesterday it was '82 (well couple of days - including jgb). At the very moment on 11-29-79 (shakedown 2nd set opener is comin up in a few). Typically listen to several shows a day between bike commute to classes and back, studying during the day, and chillin during the night. To fill the 'empty' spaces its usually some reggae, sundry electronic mixes (current fav - deep dish more specifically, sharam). Most non-dead serial listen goes to lyle lovett, Dylan (of course) curtis mayfield, john brown's body, checking out the latest wsp and phish (fwiw - finding wsp has it all over phish this tour). Basically, I see 'what all the cool kids' are listening to (on the archive, of course) and I'll find a good cover, and if someone's put love into the cover, I check out the show. See you all in the funny papers ~ dali

oh yeah - the girls (Iris, Jewels, Zinnia, and Zoey)

About the same amount of time I spend pondering the wonder of Scotland's greatest contribution to humanity (no, I'm not talking about haggis or caber-tossing). So, basically, the answer is too much.

But, like Larry, I really do attempt to balance the time with other artists; but all too often find myself going on very long stretches where the boys take up 90% of my listening time.

Really, only about 30' a day (when I go to the gym). Then, when everyone's away, and I have the house to myself, it might be 2-3 hrs, but that's not more than once every week or two...

So, I suppose I am at the low end of the continuum...does this disqualify me as PM?

I would love to post up a 2:02 half these days. Probably closer to 2:30 now. Why not - 28 more minutes to take in a pre-70s Dark Star or Eleven, Caution, CE-TOO-CE series.

The Hornsby/Skaggs collaboration was great. Have you heard their cover of Rick James' "Super Freak"? I still have trouble saying it much less typing it.

One of my Hornsby/Skaggs favourites was the revitalisation of The Way It Is - Hornsby's almost discordant solo intro before Kentucky Thunder came piling in on the main riff and the way the bluegrass voices just absolutely worked on the chorus. Wonderful, wonderful music making.
